Maestro Dr Premasiri Khemadasa

This is my blog post tribute to the late Maestro Dr Premasiri Khemadasa, the MASTER OF MUSIC who endeavored to develop a unique style of music & puts Sri Lankan music on to the top level. He combined Sinhala folk tunes, Hindustani music, Western music and many other streams of music in his compositions while adapting them to fit contemporary music.

Premasiri Khemadasa (born January 25, 1937) also known as “Khemadasa Master” is one of the most influential composers in Sri Lankan music. Exploring the various styles of music around the world Khemadasa endeavored to develop a unique style of music. He combined Sinhala folk tunes, Hindustani music, Western music and many other streams of music in his compositions while adapting them to fit contemporary music.

Early life

Khemadasa grew up in Talpitiya, Wadduwa and attended Sri Sumangala College and St. John’s College, Panadura. As a teenager, he became a gifted flautist.

Khemadasa was asked to come to the Radio Ceylon for an interview on the day he was scheduled to take his Senior School Certificate examination. He finished the examination much ahead of time and travelled to the audition. He passed the audition and became a member of Radio Ceylon.

Film composer

Khemadasa debut as a film composer came with Sirisena Wimalaweera’s Roddie Kella. He then began collaborating with acclaimed director Lester James Peries handling the music for films like Golu Hadawatha and Nidhanaya. Critics praised his film scores and he was honorally dubbed “Khemadasa master.” Khemadasa’s signature in film music is molded by the use of elements from Classical Western music and other sources to heighten the emotion suggested by the picture. Some of his compositions are influenced by Western composers of opera such as Giuseppe Verdi and Vincenzo Bellini.

Lately Premasiri Khemadasa has given his contribution to films such as Agnidahaya and very recently to Ammavarune, the last film by Lester James Peiris who has announced his retirement.

Apart from film music Dr. Khemadasa has composed music for teledramas, theatre, etc. His collaboration with director Jayantha Chandrasiri has turned out remarkable products whereas the themes he created for Chandrasiri’s television series Dandubasnamanaya have shown unprecedented power of mesmerization. He has composed symphonies like Muhuda and Mage kale mavni. The presence of operatic vocals in his music is explained by his vast knowledge of opera. Khemadasa is the only known Sri Lankan musician who practises and creates opera. Khemadasa has a large group of students whom he trains for performing in his operas. His famous operas include Manasawila and Doramandalawa. Recently he created the opera, Agni about early civilization. His operas, being written in Sinhalese, forms what can be recognized as Sinhalese opera. Khemadasa and his pupils have conducted shows in several countries. After a layoff following health problems he has returned to the fiels of music.

Little "Kalu"(Pocket Rocket)

The diminutive "Kalu" burst onto the international scene with an unbeaten 132 on debut against Australia in 1992-93. However, after such a wonderful start, he failed to secure his place in the senior side because of occasional lapses behind the stumps. He was recalled for the crucial 1995-96 tour of Australia, the turning point of his career as he combined with Sanath Jayasuriya to form a devastating pinch-hitting opening partnership. The pair's scoring rate revolutionalised one-day batting, and he was an integral figure in Sri Lanka's astonishing World Cup victory that winter. From then on, his batting style tempered somewhat and he set himself to play longer innings. The emergence of Kumar Sangakkara led to his marginalisation after 2000, although he made sporadic returns for both the one-day and Test team. The selectors' decision to ask Sangakkara to concentrate on his batting in Tests paved the way for a Test return in 2004 but his performances with the bat were patchy and, despite scoring 54 in his last Test innings, the selectors indicated a desire to look to the future when he was omitted for a 20-man training pool for New Zealand later in the year. He announced his retirement the day after, insisting that the time had come to focus on life after cricket. He coached Colts CC while conducting a career as an insurance executive. He was appointed by Sri Lanka Cricket to be a member of the 2006 ACC Committee to Evaluate China, and in 2008 took temporary charge of Malaysia.

He is the epitome of the Twenty20 generation

A right-hand all rounder - he bats in the middle order and bowls medium-pace - Kieron Pollard, who represented West Indies in the 2006 Under-19 World Cup, hit the national headlines when he smashed 83 for Trinidad and Tobago in the Stanford 20/20 in August 2006, and then underlined that potential with 126 on his first-class debut five months later. It was not only that he scored a hundred so much as the way he did so, taking 71 balls and smashing six sixes, including one of them as his first scoring stroke. Nine days later he was named in the provisional 30-man squad for the World Cup, and in his third first-class game he scored a second hundred, again including six sixes. Pollard made his ODI debut for in a World Cup match against South Africa and was then recalled for an ODI series against New Zealand in late 2008. He thrilled Indian audiences during the Champions League Twenty20 in October 2009 and his 18-ball 54 for T&T against New South Wales increased his international demand. Pollard was signed by South Australia shortly after and that was followed by an IPL contract with Mumbai Indians for a massive $750000....

Why do People Drink Alcohol?

No matter where you go, you likely notice there is always alcohol around in a social setting. Many homes today have bars, others have at least a couple of bottles on hand for their own use or to make sure they can put together drinks when company shows up.
But, why do people drink alcohol?
the number one answer to this question is what you probably would expect, socialization. Many people drink as their way to fit in with others. It often boosts their confidence and helps reduce stresses they may usually have in a social setting.
The next highest reason many people drink is because they like the taste. Be it someone with a love for beer or mixed drinks, they seem to enjoy the taste.
Next, people drink to relax, or feel at ease. One of the problems with this is that many people get used to feeling at ease and relaxed and start to rely on alcohol to make them feel that way on a daily basis.
To get a buzz or get drink are the next reasons many people like to drink, followed by drinking out of peer pressure.

The Algerian Zinedine Zidane

The France captain was sent off in the World Cup final - his last game before retirement - after driving his shaven head into the chest of Materazzi in the first period of extra time.Zidane's headbutt was "provoked" by a comment from the Italy defender...Materazzi said something very grave to him I guess.Zidane didn't want to end his career like this. He was simply very sad after the match.Zidane is a person that doesn't say much.Zidane will never have the chance to redeem himself, because the final against Italy was his last match before retirement .He has been such a great footballer.Zidane had a great chance to win the game.but the last memory of him on a field was him charging at Materazzi and headbutting him in his chest over a comment made by the defender.

Love

Love isn't blind or deaf or dumb - in fact it sees far more than it will ever tell. It is going beyond yourself and stretching who you are for someone else. Being in love entails seeing someone as you wish they were: to love them is to see who they really are and still care for them. Love isn't bitter, but you can't have love without pain: sacrifice is the hallmark of love , the coin of love.
Being in love usually is used in a romantic sense when you meet your significant other transforming a normal relationship into a deeper one without further interest in others.
Love means that you trust the person, would do anything for the person, know that person is with you through thick and thin, isn't afraid to be seen with you. make sure they treat you right. ..

My Life Experience

As we grow up,we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let us down, probably will.you'll have your heart broken and you'll break other's hearts.you'll fight with your best friend or may be even fall in love with them, and you'll cry because time is flying by.So take 2 many pictures, laugh 2 much, forgive freely, and love like you've never been hurt.Life comes with no guarantees,no time outs,no second chances.you just have to live life to the fullest, tell someone what they mean 2 you and tell someone off, speak out, dance in the rain, hold someones hand, comfort a friend, fall asleep watching the sun come up,stay up late,be a flirt, and smile until your face hurts.Don't be afraid to take chances or fall in love in most of all, live in the moment because every second you spend angry or upset is a second of happiness you can never get back.....
